For those who usually shun the idea of fancy dress, here are: 5 men’s Halloween costumes that are more tasteful than terrifying.

Halloween; a daunting word in the vocabulary of Gentleman around the globe, do not fret there is no reason why demons can’t be dapper too. Whether you see Halloween as an opportunity to ward off spirits…or to drink them, it is an evening of mischief that even the most elegant of men cannot resist.

1920’s Gangster

Roaring 20's American Gangster Men's Halloween Costume

Why not take it back to the roaring 20’s when a speakeasy was the venue of choice? Think Al Capone, Bonnie and Clyde, and a whole lot of pinstripe suits. No true gangster would be seen without his trusty fedora, most often of the monochrome variety. For your base opt for a classic 3-piece suit, preferably pinstripe but any muted colour would do the trick. Where possible, ensure that your suit is double breasted, a clear indicator of the era and very on trend! Add a chunky Cuban cigar as a prop and finish with our Harrow Silk Tie, sleek and simple whilst in keeping with the monochrome theme.

The Joker

The Joker Smirking Idea for Men's Halloween Costumes

Only a true colour connoisseur such as the Joker has the ability pull off such an audacious colour combination as purple and green. The great thing when taking on the role of the Joker is that he is an entirely versatile character; from Heath Ledger’s edgy yet stylish portrayal of the iconic baddie, to Jared Leto’s more alternative tattooed version in 2016’s Suicide Squad. The possibilities on how you convey this character are endless. We suggest opting for a light mauve shirt with a fitted green waistcoat. You can tone down the Joker’s shocking purple overcoat by replacing it with a smart burgundy or aubergine blazer for a suitably formal twist. Finish the look with a green crested tie and bring the entire ensemble together with the addition of our Royal Regiment of Scotland braces, which feature accents of both green and purple to help add fluidity to the costume.

Gomez Addams

Gomez and Morticia Addams Men's Halloween Costumes

Equally as couture as he is creepy, Gomez Addams is a style icon in his own right. Effortlessly finessing the sleepwear as outerwear trend, his velvet Hugh Hefner-esque dressing gown can often be found doubled up as a sartorial smoking jacket. If you are looking to cut a stylish silhouette this October, select one of Gomez’s iconic looks. Layer a thin pinstripe suit in a black or navy atop a clashing pinstriped shirt in the inverse colours. Add an elaborate bow tie that offers print and texture. Our Montgomery Pure Wool Bow Tie would make for an excellent choice. It’s miniature hounds-tooth pattern, mixed with its authentic wool texture aptly combines the two. A look that is sure to garner attention, you may even find your very own Morticia.

Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd Men's Halloween Costumes

In the battle for the most gruesome of all Halloween icons, Sweeney Todd is certainly a cut-throat contender. If the title ‘The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ isn’t enough to give you some indication of his immorality, then his strange obsession with both murder and pies should do just that. Side note: we are not suggesting pies are immoral in any way, we are firm advocates of a Great British pie.

Your Sweeney Todd attire should make a clear nod to the Victorian era. Starting with a balloon sleeve shirt in a lightweight linen and layering with a double-breasted waistcoat in an earthy tone. If you’d like to pay homage to Johnny Depp’s quirky 2007 portrayal of the character, why not add a paisley or baroque cravat? He could often be seen sporting a tattered brown necktie in the film, however a cravat makes for a much smarter alternative. For trousers, a pair of pinstripe strides will work nicely – a clear running theme in the world of movie villains. Finish with a spritz of white hairspray and tuck a white rag in to your belt, a necessity when cleaning your razor.

Count Dracula

Count Dracula Iconic Men's Halloween Costumes

For a classic man, comes a classic costume. The patriarch of the Vampire world, Dracula comes before the dawn of Twilight and more modern vampire titles. A true original, there is no doubt that Dracula truly is as dapper as they come. From the impeccably slicked back hair, to his neatly secured bow tie, he is one of the chicest in the spectral world.

Every Count Dracula look must begin with a cape. The criteria: flowing, floor length and with an exaggerated neckline, all of which make taking flight that much more dramatic. The suit should be minimal with no extravagances; well tailored and a classic fit. For the waistcoat, opt for a pearlescent grey or a stark white. Depending what incarnation of Dracula you look to for inspiration he is most frequently seen wearing either a red or white bow tie. Considering this, our Cable Knit Maroon bow tie would be an ideal way to incorporate a fresh modern accessory into this otherwise textbook look.
